QUINTA DO CASTRO "VINHAS VELHAS" 2005Portuguese wines number among the best in the world of wine. The small but excellent vineyard Quinta do Crasto has enjoyed a great reputation in the Portuguese wine scene for many years, ranking among the country’s top wine producers. For a while now, Quinta has been on the top of the lists compiled by international wine critics. “Decanter”, “Wine spectator” and also Janics “Robinson” have praised this vineyard. “Wine spectator” magazine awarded the Almeida Roquette family with the most distinguished award, selecting the 2005 “Quinta do Crasto Vinhas Velhas” as the third among one hundred select wines. “Vinhas Velhas” is also the wine that I would like to present to you in this edition. The Portuguese term “Vinhas Velhas” simply means “Old vines”. No less than 30 different grapes add to the flavour of this prize-winning wine, all of them more than 70 years old. This complex and rich red wine matures in American oak barrels for up to 18 months and can be drunk shortly after bottling. Quinta do Crasto has been in the hands of the Almeida Roquette family for three generations and is situated in the centre of the famous port region. The family’s lands are located on the slopes of the Douro river. This river also gives its name to the valley and to the entire region. Not only the Douro valley but also Quinta do Crasto are worth a visit. |
